Sorry for the delay, just back in front of a computer. My point is that Holland could easily have been knocked out by losing to us (they were heading out before their consolation goal) so the idea they were taking it easy against us doesn't ring true to me. I agree though that we were pretty poor in the other games (except Germany) but that doesn't mean the performance against Holland wasn't one of the best England performances.

Heard a lot of great tributes and stories over the past couple of days but probably the best one(s) was from Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer on their podcast (The rest is football).
Lineker got quite emotional at times.
Would have been interesting seeing him stay on as England boss and work with the youngsters coming through like David Beckham, Paul Scholes & Michael Owen in 1998.

I doubt if anyone involved with football would have a bad word to say against el Tel . Sugar excluded . Which is a compliment to him .

If I Remember correctly he co-wrote the Hazell books which then spawned one of my favourite television series

Let's not forget he also co-wrote a book which became a tv series, Hazel. Author, footballer, singer, football manager, a talented man indeed. Only time I didn't think he looked comfortable was as Steve McClaren's right hand man when the Wally With the Brolley was in charge, strange one that.

Saw him play for spurs when we beat them 4-3 at white hart lane in 1966. To this day that is one of my favourite games. Away support was amazing.
Any friend of Mooro’s is a friend of mine. RIP.

Think he could have gone on to great things with England had the FA not been so backward thinking. Seemed like he was someone all the players admired and enjoyed playing for him.

Great memories of 96.
I think he deserved another major tournament with England long with Barca. He was the victim of politics in both situations.
A great man. Great personality.

I thought if Scotland had won 2-0 against the Swiss rather than 1-0 Holland would have gone out?
If Scotland won 1 - 0,as they did, the Dutch had to avoid a 4 goal margin of defeat against us, to go through. Hence the expression "virtually qualified."

Sad news, a top footballer and a great manager. The only player to represent England at every level including Amateur. (good quiz question that). Past teammates of mine had played with and against him at the schoolboy level and thought he was a decent person. Would often see him out drinking with Moore and co back in the day. Always seemed to be enjoying life and he could hold a decent tune.

First player I saw that had an unconventional run up when talking a penalty for Chelsea.
Ahead of his time tactical wise which he started at Crystal Palace with John Cartwright.
He'll be sadly missed in football and in person.RIP.

Great manager and personality.
That Holland game was the best performance I have ever seen by England.
That match aside and maybe the German game I wouldn’t say we were that great in the Euros but it was memorable nonetheless and it would have been nice to see what El Tel could have done with the players at future tournaments.

Think he was someone who was universally popular in football
A proper football man who wanted to play to entertain and was a great charismatic character.

Met him on his opening night of the pub he bought, the Plough and Harrow Leytonstone
As for choosing Chelsea over West Ham:-
Venables left school in the summer of 1958 and signed for Chelsea as an apprentice at the age of 15. He later said that he joined Chelsea as he felt he had a better chance of breaking into the first team at Stamford Bridge, and also because the club offered his father a job as a part-time scout, and he denied West Ham's youth coach Malcolm Allison's claim that he had only joined Chelsea for financial reasons.

It was such a shame he only got to manage them 4 competitive games in the Euros.
We would have smashed Argentina at France 98.
